Peter G. Keith, B.Eng.
(Mech), D.Au.E., M.Sc., P.Eng.
Peter Keith graduated from McGill University with a degree in Mechanical
Engineering in 1961; his practical experience included work at the
Ferrari factory in Italy and the R & D Department of Canadair
Aircraft in Montreal. Over the period from 1959 - 1975 he was involved
in motor racing, and competed in national and international events
in Canada and the USA. He completed five years of post-graduate
training in Automobile Engineering in England in 1972. From 1972
- 1981 he worked with the Road Safety Branch of Transport Canada
in Ottawa as Chief of Advanced Engineering Projects. During that
time he assisted in the evaluation and development of the current
Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for Seat Belts; conducted
full scale simulated crash tests to evaluate seat belt effectiveness;
and directed national accident and defect investigations for Transport
Canada. He represented Canada on the Vehicle Dynamics Committee
of the International Standards Organization (ISO) from 1972 - 1995;
was President of the Canadian Association of Technical Accident
Investigators & Reconstructionists (CATAIR) from 1987 - 1989; was a member
of the Board of Directors of the Alberta Safety Council and Chairman
of the Traffic Safety Committee during 1984 - 1986. Since 1983 he
has been engaged full time in Accident Reconstruction in Calgary,
with clients across Canada and in the USA, and has investigated
all types of accidents including motor vehicles, boats, trains and
planes, as well as product liability investigations. He has testified
in Court over one hundred times, and the first cases in Alberta where
the seat belt defence was accepted reflected his testimony. He has
appeared four times on the CBC program 'Market Place', and is a
member of numerous professional associations.
Mark H. Cheng, B.Sc. (Mech), P.Eng.
Mark Cheng graduated from the University of Calgary in 1996 with
a B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering. As a senior engineer with us since 1997, Mark handles his own accident reconstruction files while also working with Peter Keith on the analysis of other major accident reconstructions. He has many years of experience in the inspection and measurement of accident scenes, the measurement of crush damage to vehicles for calculation of speeds, the examination of vehicles for seat belt use and effectiveness, the inspection of automotive components for mechanical failure, and the production of technical reports pursuant to these investigations. These reports generally focus on vehicle dynamics, occupant kinematics, impact severity, seat belt effectiveness, driver actions, and failures of tires and mechanical components. Mark is a specialist in the investigation of low speed collisions and motorcycle accidents, and he has
considerable expertise with accident reconstruction
programs such as WinCRASH and PC-Crash. He also has extensive training in the analysis of 'black-box' crash data.
